Stormriders Practice #9: A Review
I'm not sure if it was the new t-shirts or the maple whiskey, but that was another great practice last night everyone. Technically, we are picking up on things very well. The work ethic, as always, was top notch. You all put in a great effort for a tough practice.
Enjoy your weekend and see you all next Tuesday.
Lifesavers Practice #13: A Review
Where were you all last night?! 3 people showed up! Folks, we've got to get out to practice. I know the traffic was a bit nuts coming out of the city last night and that there were some people that had circumstances beyond their control, but where were the rest of you?!
Consistency is the name of the game here. If we don't practice as a group on a regular basis, it will be really tough to make improvements.
Let's go for a better showing next Tuesday. Have a nice weekend.
June 28, 2007
Sorry for the delayed post today. I have been at the canoe club since 7:30am and just returned home for lunch.
I have 45 minutes before I have to be back at the club, so the practices are going to be listed here and will apply to both teams.
So, tonight's practice is:
- technical review (10-20 minutes)
- 5x200m RACE PACE with starts. (we have a course installed for the weekend; hence my being at the club since 7:30am!)
See you all tonight. Remember, t-shirts have arrived!

Lifesavers Practice #11: A Review
Good work last night everyone. I was a little worried that the threatening skies would turn people away from practice, but we had a decent sized group. I know the practice was tough, especially with just 13 people. However, you all pushed through and made it a good one.
Please remember that there is no practice Tuesday to accommodate the long weekend.
Also, the t-shirts have arrived and some of you have already received them. Everyone else, they're waiting for you at the club. Come on out to practice and you'll get your 2007 team shirt.
Have a great weekend. I will update the blog as of next Thursday. Until then, it and I are taking a little break.

Stormriders Practice #8: A Review
Lucky for us, we rode out the storm (must have been because you guys are the Storm-Riders...) After that practice, I'm sure many of you were hoping a storm would have cut it short.
However, you all worked really hard and I was impressed with how the boat was feeling. As a whole, we are really starting to understand how to hit the catch and reach up front. Good work.
Edith, please e-mail me and let me know what is going on for next Tuesday. It really isn't a problem if you guys want to keep the Tuesday practice instead of switching to Thursday.
Lifesavers Practice #10: A Review
Nice work last night. The practice certainly wasn't easy. But, it's time to get things going in case we come across any 500 metre races this summer. Expect to be working more and more in those energy systems.
I saw a big improvement last night in terms of getting up to the catch and dropping your body weight onto the paddle. This is something we will keep working on as it is very important.
Luckily, we made it through the night without any storms.
Please remember that we are practicing this Thursday but not next Tuesday because of the long weekend. See you all tomorrow.
Thunderstorms Tonight- June 19, 2007- Update: 3:15pm
It looks like we may be in for a night of thunderstorms and rain. Rain isn't a problem. We'll still go out. However, if, let's say 30 minutes before the regularly scheduled practice time there is a thunderstorm going on, please assume we will not be going on the water.
Stormriders: If your practice ends up getting canceled tonight, we can move it to Thursday instead if that works for everyone. It would be at the same time as the normal Tuesday practice.
Lifesavers: If your practice gets canceled tonight, we can add it onto either this Thursday or next Tuesday (the two practices we had not yet figured out which will be not held because of the long weekend. This is something we need to decide tonight.)
If anyone is burning to get in some physical activity, I can run a circuit at the club.
If there's a storm, please don't make the trek into Lachine unless you want to do the circuit. I don't want anyone wasting gas and time for nothing!
June 19, 2007
The weather is getting very hot. Everyone, please remember to bring a water bottle to practice from now on. (If you haven't already been bringing one, of course.)
If possible, I would like to know this week what races both teams (Lifesavers and Stormriders) are planning to do for the rest of the summer.
Don't forget, the practices can be found in the "On-Water" section. See you all tonight.

Lifesavers Practice #9: A Review
Practice was very productive last night everyone. Good job. I think we are making progress with technique every day. Consistency is the key though. The more we have full boats and productive nights, the faster the group as a whole will improve. The nights out on the lake are beautiful and should stay that way for the next little while.
For those of you who were there last night, you heard my announcement about the t-shirts. We were unable to cancel the order. I know that was a cost saving mechanism, but on the other hand, we'll all look good!
Have a great weekend and see you all Tuesday.
June 13, 2007
Lifesavers Review: Good work last night everyone. I hope the technical elements and rhythm we are working on is helping. Personally, I think it is making a difference.
I hope everyone enjoyed the game of tug-of-war. You all impressed the other boat on your last effort.
See you all tomorrow night.
Stormriders Review: I think last night's practice was the best to date. Everyone is getting the idea of finding resistance up front and catching hard. You all pushed through that workout very well. It wasn't easy. Good job.
See you all next week.

Great job this weekend everyone. I thought the Lachine festival was a great success. The weather was perfect, the event ran smoothly and I think everyone had a lot of fun.
Stormriders: I thought the work we did last week paid off. The stroke maintained the rhythm we established and everyone was thinking more and more about the catch. I hope you all had fun at the post-race BBQ.
We will continue to work on the rhythm and technical points as the season moves on. As soon as we know which other festivals you will be competing at for the rest of the summer, I will gear the training toward the specific distances.
If anyone has photos from the day, please e-mail them to me so I can post them on the blog.
Again, great job and see you all Tuesday night.
Lifesavers: From the heat to semi to the final, the boat as a whole made significant improvements. Our lack of time together as an entire group showed early on but you all overcame that and put together some solid races.
We will be putting in a lot of time working on technique, both individually and as a group. There are a few things I want to work on that will help the entire boat.
I will gear the training for the rest of the season depending on which races you choose to compete at.
Thanks to all the new Lachine members who came out to help us complete the boat. You made a big difference. I hope to see you all back racing in the future.
If anyone has any photos from the day, please e-mail them to me so I can post them on the blog.
Once again, the food this year was fantastic. Thanks for all the tasty deserts!
Practices resume tomorrow night. See you all there!

Lifesavers Practice #7: A Review
Thanks to those who showed up last night. For those of you who weren't able to make it, I understand there was a lot of traffic on the Ville-Marie last night. I hope you all have the intention to race tomorrow!
Just some information about the races tomorrow since we didn't have a chance to go over this last night as a group.
- please arrive at 7:30am
- meet Sham and the group on the side opposite the club (across the bridge) near the shore. You should see everyone.
- we will be mixing with some other people from Lachine to complete our boat. I ask for everyone's cooperation in making this smooth. It has been quite a challenge to make sure the boat will be racing at all!
If you have any questions, please e-mail me directly. I will respond this evening. I am working for the rest of the day.
Thanks and see you all tomorrow. Let's get ready to race!
StormRiders Practice #6: A Review
I was really pleased with last night's practice. Everyone was paddling very well. The additional emphasis on the catch as well as adding that 'hit and glide' rhythm really helped. Well done.
I hope everyone is looking forward to racing this weekend. You will be able to find me at the club before your race. Mark has my cell phone number. I will do my best to keep my phone with me at all times in case I need to be reached. At worst, if you can't find me, ask the announcer to call me over the loudspeaker.
See you all tomorrow. Let's get ready to race!

Great work last night everyone! Everyone paddled really well together and the technique was looking great...
Alright, alright... I'm kidding. For those of you who showed up, thanks for making the effort to come down. No one was expecting the wind to come up so fast. It still hasn't died down! When the storm looked like it was going to pass, I was sure we were going to go out. Once the wind picked up, it was too late to rearrange the club upstairs to set up a circuit. There's a lot of stuff up there and we would have spent most of the time moving and not enough time doing a workout. With the festival coming up this weekend, the club is packed with stuff. We were keeping our fingers crossed that this week wouldn't have been the one where bad weather would strike.
For those of you who weren't there last night, we still have practice tomorrow evening (for both the Stormriders and Lifesavers.) Last one before Lachine, so let's go for a big turnout! I want to work on technique and some 200m pieces. The practices from last night will be carried over to tomorrow.
Lifesavers: we have some news on your t-shirts. We are looking into getting a different model to keep the same colours as before. If that doesn't work, navy and red in the model that you saw will have to be what we go with. Again, I apologize for this.
Stormriders: we're keeping our fingers crossed that your shirts arrive before the weekend. If not, thanks to Cimon for helping us out with shirts.
See you all tomorrow.

Les pratiques ce soir ne seront pas annulées à cause de la pluie. Si on a un orage, on va simplement faire quelque chose d’autre.
S’il vous plait vous présenter pour vos sessions d’entraînement normales.
Merci.
Just in case anyone was wondering, (since I just noticed the traffic went up during the thunderstorm) practices will be going on as normal tonight. If a storm hits during the practice time, we will do something else. Even if it is raining, we will be going on the water. Please show up for the regularly scheduled training session.
Thanks.
June 4, 2007
Lifesavers and Stormriders: I received some unfortunate news regarding the t-shirts this weekend. They may not be ready for the Lachine festival. It is still possible, but the order, because of the size, is taking a little longer to arrive than originally planned. I'm terribly sorry about this. The time frame I was given was supposed to work. Another lesson learned, I suppose.
However, we should still have enough t-shirts from last year's members that it won't be a problem. In general, this is the first race of the season for most teams, so not everyone will be fully decked out.
Stormriders: I think most people still have the original orange from last year. If there are any new members that don't have one, perhaps we could try to borrow from the people from last year who won't be racing.
Lifesavers: There are still lots of people who have a shirt from last year that are on the team this year. If we don't get the shirts on time, why don't we wear those and everyone else that doesn't have one can wear black? I think it would be a decent solution.
Anyway, sorry about this. I am going to push to have them ready as soon as possible.
